Global Winnipeg Goes Digital Over-the-Air

Posted by Brian Schultz

Global TV is the first channel in Winnipeg to go digital over-the-air (OTA).

The newly-acquired television asset of Shaw Media Inc. made the switch on December 16, broadcasting in HD to channel 40.1 at 14,900 watts.

Only those with rabbit ears can pick up the new digital channel, which was approved by the CRTC last August. A digital converter box will be required for older televisions without an ATSC tuner.

According to DigitalHome.ca, the channel is mapping at 9.1 HD and 9.3 SD, and has a signal strength of 95%.

Other broadcasters have until August 31, 2011 to complete the transition to digital.

Shaw is expected to make a formal announcement this week regarding the channel.

UPDATE: Shaw has added Global Winnipeg in 1080i to channel 211 for digital subscribers.

Just a technical quibble… Most people will not have to disconnect anything to get over the air HD TV. If you have a high definition TV the RF input is the worst way to connect to a cable box and is normally unused. You don’t need a “HD” style antenna to try this out. The bunny ears from the dollar store will work just as well. Personally I am just using a random hunk of wire put into the RF input and am getting 82% signal strength and a perfect picture.

The lovely Shannon Martin seen in HD? I’m sold!

“If you have cable or digital cable on Shaw or MTS TV, you cannot see the channel just yet,”

Ahh….global winnipeg is now being broadcast in HD on shaw. check it out. at least it was yesterday

On channel 12? Not for me. Looks the same as before. I noticed they’re broadcasting in widescreen now, but the quality appears to be the same. I’m on Shaw.

Will this channel be added to the HD lineup on Shaw anytime soon? What good is over-the-air if only a handful of people can see it?

  • sammy

look in the HD section on shaw. Channel 200 and up.

  • Ryan

Will have to check when I get home from work. Tried looking for it on the weekend, but couldn’t find it. Did Shaw add it today?

  • ‘Pegger

@Ryan: Shaw must have added the channel today or late yesterday, because I also couldn’t see it when I looked in the 200′s on Saturday. Any MTS viewers out there that can confirm if they have it too?

EVERYONE can see it over the air. It’s free over the air. All you need is an antenna of some sort, of varying quality depending on how far from the signal you are. That’s the point. Perfect digital high def picture without paying a cent to anyone? Why would anyone be against that? Now we have to wait and see how long it takes for CBC, CTV, JoyTV, and CITY TV to do the same. 5 channels in perfect digital for free. Seems like a nice future. Especially if you don’t really watch anything else.

MTS Ultimate TV has had this up and running for a while, channel 455 I think. At first it looked like it was just a repeater for the SD signal though.

I think Jim Toth’s hair should have it’s own HD channel.

Watched Global News on Shaw channel 211 at 6. Still needs some tweaking. I have widescreen format set on my TV, but the broadcast is still 4:3 ratio and not 16:9. To compensate, they have green checkered bars on both sides of the screen. Sometimes there is black bars, and other times, like during pre-set graphics, the screen is stretched to 16:9. They need consistency with this new format. Will be sticking to channel 12 until they figure things out.

  • Ryan

Yup. PVR’d the newscast and was a bit disappointed with the 4:3 ratio on my 42″ widescreen. Bummer. It’s a simple fix too. Their techs should get on that and broadcast 16:9 HD.

Wouldn’t they have to replace all their studio and news gathering cameras to produce a 16:9 newscast? Not to mention any editing facility they might have that is not up to the new higher bit rate…

From what I have been told about Global’s in-studio cameras have been in HD sense they have been doing their newscasts in front of a Green Screen.
