Shaw to Send E-mails Warning of Illegal Downloading

Shaw Communications will begin sending out warning e-mails to customers who choose to use their Internet connection to download content illegally.

The move comes from a request by Warner Brothers Entertainment, who wants Shaw to warn customers about downloading copyrighted movies and music.

In extreme cases, Shaw could end up cancelling an offending customer’s service if Warner was to obtain a court order.

A spokesperson for Shaw says the company maintains a relationship with all broadcasters and copyright holders, and has an obligation to protect their content.

The notice would serve only as a warning, notifying the customer that a content holder has made Shaw aware of an infringement.

    It’s a joke.
I got one I have it on the fridge and I laugh at it every time I walk past it.

If anyone is looking for an MTS or Shaw alternative, there are at least two other great ISPs in winterpeg: les.net and voinetworks. I dropped MTS/Shaw long ago and have never looked back.

Lincoln, yeah that’s why MTS has sucked for years (among other reasons). Now Shaw insists on sucking in this way as well. Damn.

Can’t stop technology, they tried with Napster and look how far we’ve come. Someone will come out with a way around it.

Shaw’s sending them to all customers – whether they downloaded illegally or not, it’s not based on actual usage. It was part of their agreement for getting content from Warner for their VOD services and stuff. A little less 1984.
