Wild Grass Fire Causes Extensive Damage in Westman

An out of control grass fire near Shilo has caused extensive damage to rural property.

RCMP say the blaze began on Tuesday morning shortly after 4:30 a.m. near the community of Sprucewoods in the RM of Cornwallis.

According to police, strong west winds made containing the fire difficult, resulting in a large barn being destroyed and other property, including a vacant single wide trailer, landscape and fences.

Area farmers helped crews try to contain the blaze, which took about three hours to get under control.

Damage estimates aren’t yet available, but the fire appears to be accidental. No injuries were reported.
