The University of Manitoba Bison men’s cross country team finished in 12th place Saturday at the 2011 CIS National Cross Country Championship held at Laval University. The women’s team came in at a distant 16th place.
Both teams competed in snowy conditions, where the men placed fifth in Canada West rankings and the women sixth.
The men were led by second-yard runner Thomas Miller, who completed the 10km race on the Plains of Abraham with a 68th finish (18th in Canada West) in a time of 34:51. Miller was followed by Bison fifth-year Colin Shepherd running in 72nd place overall (21st in conference) in a time of 35:01.
Lacey deJong placed 68th overall (19th in Canada West) and was the top finisher in the 5km race on the Plains of Abraham. Fourth-year Alice Sherwin followed, placing 69th (20th in conference) in a time of 20:08. Third-year Michelle Lavoie raced to a 76th finish (23rd in Canada West) in a time of 20:19.
“We were hoping for Top 10 finishes for both our teams and it did not happen,” Bisons head coach Claude Berube said in a statement. “Our athletes ran hard but needed above and beyond performance against a strong and deep field to place high.
