What’s next for Obby Khan? The restaurant business.

Khan formally announced his retirement from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Wednesday afternoon, and then revealed plans to open up his own restaurant.

Shawarma Khan will have a Middle Eastern-inspired atmosphere with a Western twist located in downtown Winnipeg. Khan will be the owner, operator and face of the restaurant, set to open this summer.

“I didn’t know much when I started to think about retirement, but I knew that I wanted to stay in Winnipeg. I love it here and have felt so welcomed and loved ever since I got here,” Khan said in a news release.

The restaurant will have several Blue and Gold ties, including items such as the Milt Stegall-inspired salad, a Doug Brown “Big Bird” Shawarma and a “Wrath of Khan” Shawarma item. The menu will feature many locally grown products, including free-range chicken.

Shawrama is described as a Middle Eastern style of cooking, in which meat is slowly cooked on a vertical split, then carved and served to order.
