A student from St. Norbert Collegiate is in police custody after allegedly uttering threats to fellow students on Tuesday.

Winnipeg police responded to the school at about 10 a.m. and took the 17-year-old male into custody shortly before noon.

He has been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre and is facing the charge of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

Police say any type of threats made against members of the public is taken very seriously and will be investigated thoroughly.

Many schools are on heightened alert after the mass shooting in the U.S. on December 14 in Newtown, Conn.
