Police Warn of Fake $100 Bills Circulating

By David Klassen

Canadian $100 BillWinnipeg police are warning the public and merchants to be aware of counterfeit $100 bills currently circulating.

Police have recently received reports of the fraudulent currency and are reminding citizens to check their bank notes.

Information on security features of Canadian notes can be found at bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes.

If a suspected counterfeit note is tendered to you or your staff:

  • Inspect it closely and compare it to a known authentic bill if possible.
  • If safe to do so, retain the bill and ask the customer for another form of payment. As a consumer, decline the note and request another form of change.
  • Try to obtain identification from the suspect, and note a description of the suspect or vehicle plate information.
  • Notify police immediately.
