The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is cautioning the public to be careful around ice-covered bodies of water.

Rivers, streams, creeks, ponds and ditches are seeing ice beginning to form as the temperatures drop, creating extremely dangerous conditions.

The WFPS received more than 100 water and ice safety calls in 2012, and initiated full search and rescue efforts for 69 of them.

Environment Canada is calling for an overnight low in Winnipeg of -16°C.
