Man Sentenced After Smuggling Child Porn at Border

CBSAA Ukrainian man who attempted to cross into Canada from the U.S. has been sentenced for smuggling child pornography.

Denys Valeriyovych Basov, 36, was sentenced Wednesday to two-and-half-years in jail after border agents found 337 images and six videos of child pornography on the man’s laptop.

Basov attempted to cross at Emerson, Manitoba on May 7 hauling freight from the United States at the time of his arrest. He had remained in pre-trial custody ever since.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says the sentence is believed to be one of the most significant handed down for importing child pornography under the Customs Act.

Basov had a valid Canadian work permit to remain in the country.
