Attorney General’s Response to Clearing Kyle Unger
Attorney General Dave Chomiak spoke out this afternoon on the acquittal of charges against Kyle Unger related to the murder of Brigitte Grenier in 1990.
Unger spent 14 years in prison for the death of the 16-year-old in Roseisle, Manitoba at a rock concert, but was cleared of those charges earlier this morning in a Winnipeg courtroom.
“The process that was followed was recommended after the Driskell Inquiry. The Crown brought the case to court and called no evidence, bringing it to a conclusion,” Chomiak said.
Watch:
RCMP re-investigated the case using today’s scientific expertise and disproved hair evidence using modern DNA testing.
Chomiak said compensation for Unger is not appropriate based on external legal advice.
UPDATE: 3:20 p.m. — Unger’s lawyer, Hersh Wolch, said at a news conference this afternoon that his client may sue the Manitoba government for compensation. As noted above, the government said today they will not be compensating Kyle Unger.

Don’t ya just love the unmitigated arrogance of the police/crown/justice officials when this happens?
Good bloody thing Dangerfield has retired. The man is a menace to innocent Manitobans.

Why does Freep reporter Bruce Owen (in the left of the frame) always wear a suit? He’s making the other reporters feel inferior.

He’s the paper’s legislative reporter. Although he ditched the tie today… probably for casual Friday.

Tell Chomiak to smile once in a while.
