The union representing Greyhound bus drivers is calling for its members to restrict carry-on luggage on all buses. The move comes after last month’s horrific murder of a 22-year-old Winnipeg man.

They’re hoping this reduces violence and assures passenger safety.

Here’s my take on this…

  • Some carry-on luggage is still being allowed, such as medication, baby supplies and women’s purses. Since when did a knife not fit into a purse?
  • Even if carry-on luggage is restricted, a knife, gun or other deadly weapon can easily be brought on strapped to a passenger’s leg, or even in their pocket.

I know metal detectors are out of the question due to Greyhound’s rural service, but how about portable metal wands? The bus drivers could easily wand anyone who gets off the bus before they get back on.

While Greyhound’s intentions are in the right place, banning carry-on luggage won’t prevent any type of future crime in my opinion.
