Residents Revolt New Garbage Bins, Dump Trash Elsewhere
![]()

Tuesday was the first day residents in the northwest area of Winnipeg experienced using their new automated garbage bins. Reaction from homeowners was mostly negative if you watched any of the three newscasts last night.
One of the main complaints is that the bins aren’t big enough for larger families. The city says they can bring in a garbage consultant to assess a family’s garbage habits to reduce waste if it becomes a problem. The idea of a garbage consultant was laughable to many.
Those who did not get their trash picked up — because they had too many bags — organized a little operation Tuesday evening in the Garden City area. Homeowners rounded up the many bags that wouldn’t fit in their bins and met behind a local shopping centre in the area. At 8 p.m. they dumped approximately 26 bags of trash inside a private bin.
One resident named Gerry (he didn’t want to give his last name) told ChrisD.ca in an e-mail, “We’re sticking it to them.” It wasn’t clear if he meant the City of Winnipeg, or the company who handles the trash (BFI Canada). Gerry also included these humourous lines: “They give us all these rules to follow. I work all day… do I need to take an after hours class to familiarize myself with how to move a bin to the street.” Classic.
“Why am I paying taxes if the city won’t pick up my garbage? It’s (expletive) absurd.” Upset residents said they will continue to privately dump their trash in bins around the city, or just leave it on the street to protest a lack of space in the new bins. Each bin holds three bags and must shut tightly for crews to pick it up.
Later this month about 42,000 homes in the city will be using the new bins. Officials hope to have the new program in place citywide by 2013.
Hopefully the smelly situation and tempers of angry residents die down by then.

Classic reaction to something new. We’ve had these bins in Quebec for a couple of years now and people just adjusted to them after a while. Even “big” families. One of the solution found was to add a second bin (blue) for recycling. If people start recycling everything they can in their household, it will reduce the amount of garbage by half.

We have 7 people in our household, and we very rarely put out 7 bags of garbage. What are you doing in there?
(Oh, and if you reference 3 other newscasts doing this story in the story itself, the “EXCLUSIVE” tag really doesn’t hold much water, does it?)

The tag holds more water than the new trash bins ever could.

Kirby, show me where else it’s reported that residents dumped trash behind a mall last night and you might have a point. Simply referencing the opinion of those interviewed on the news in one line doesn’t make the story not an exclusive. It’s purely to put it into context for the rest of the article.

These bins have been in Grand Forks for a couple of years now, and I don’t hear my cousin nor other residents complain.
Winnipeg loves to complain, especially about something new.

In the summer time, with my large lawns, I produce 5 or 6 large garbage bags of grass clippings with each mowing. How in the hell are they going to take that away? They sure won’t fit in those stupid bins. Surely I’m not the only one in that boat.
The city hasn’t thought this through very well.

How have other major cities managed to implement this solution?
Can grass clippings be composted?

My neighbour’s bin has already gone missing. Yup. He came home from work last night around 9:30 p.m. and it wasn’t there.
Not that he’s complaining. He doesn’t plan on replacing it and will let his bags of trash pile up on his driveway until the city takes them.

Worst idea the city has ever come up with. I don’t have a garage and don’t want this ugly bin sitting on the side of my house all week. Doesn’t make the street look that pleasant. Then there are those idiots who leave the bins out all week. Just great.

What the heck are you doing throwing out grass clippings? That’s some of the best composting material.
Although I agree the bins are silly, some of you should maybe look at the amount of garbage you’re producing and think about starting recycling/composting etc. It’s not just for hippies anymore.

If you have a lawn large enough to produce 5-6 *bags* of compost a mowing, you have a use for compost.

Wrong. I don’t care to be a weekend gardener. I don’t have a garden in the summer, and I don’t care to fertilize my lawn either. I mow it, and I trash it. Simple as that. I’m a single male living in a house alone, and I don’t care (or have the time) to screw around with that crap.

I live in a 3 person household and after recycling we produce a small bag of garbage per week.
The 4 to 6 bag lawn waste is a problem for us.
I recently got rid of my compost pile because it was full of ground nests. I just couldn’t take the wasps anymore. Andrew can you recommend a wasp free compost solution.

I don’t live in the area, so I can’t speak as to the (in)convenience of these new bins. I’m sure that it’s a pain to make sure the bins are placed “just so” on the curb to ensure pickup. And yeah, theft’s going to be a problem for some.
As for the people who say the bins don’t hold enough for a family. Really? REALLY?!
I live in a 2-person household, and our recycling bins easily fill up before our garbage does. If we’re “lucky”, we throw out 1/2 a large garbage bag a week – and that’s a rarity… It’s usually less. Even if you increase the garbage proportionally, even a 7-person household wouldn’t have more than 4 bags per week, max.
As for the grass clippings, I believe they can be taken to the seasonal recycling depot with leaves and branches, yes?
As for “I pay taxes…”, these are probably the same people who want property taxes frozen year after year, but still exxpect teh same level of service.
And leaving your garbage out rotting in front of your house where it stinks up YOUR neighbourhood? Yeah, that’ll show “them.”
As a winnipegcat post recently said “I hate the way things are.. But i hate change more.” Distinctly Winnipeg.
I sadly know of a lot of people who don’t recycle at all. Hopefully this will push people to change their ways.

This system needs to be fine-tuned. I couldn’t believe how these trucks operate. Why don’t they just create a smaller version of the big BFI bins for everyone? You know, a latch on each side of the bin, two prongs come out and latch onto the bin, lift it up and dump it into the truck. The joystick arms they are using now are funny to watch. I watched one of the trucks go down my street, the reported 8 seconds per bin is way off. More like 80 seconds. The arms knocked stuff all over the place, mostly recyling bins. Since the garbage all had to be on one side of the lane, it got awful messy with recyling bins and everything else. Honestly if I am a homeowner on that side, I am complaining because all the garbage that the truck couldn’t handle that isn’t even mine is all over my lot? WTF. A lot of glitches, I can’t believe people get paid to come up with these ideas, and perform so poorly.

It is silly when you consider a humna has to align the vehicle. These things should have a docking pad or a bar code that allows the truck to sense its location and pick it up. This would be the first step in having automated pickups.

I live outside of town and my property taxes don’t cover garbage pickup. There is a private company that i have to pay extra to come by and pick up my garbage. They have a 4 bag limit and in the three years we’ve used this service we once had 3 bags, and that’s because we cleaned the basement. We are a family of 3. Why is this such a big deal? Why are the people of Winnipeg stuck in the 1940’s? I never thought i’d see the government more forward thinking than the people it served.

Well, I don’t have them here yet, but the fact is – change happens. You can’t escape it. People line up for the conveniences and are quick to complain about the inconveniences. Really – quit yer whining and deal with it. Yeah some of the trucks didn’t do well and knocked stuff over – IT’S THE FIRST DAY!!!! Were you a pro at your job after 8 hours? Idiots. Sounds like nap time for you babies.

Oh yeah – like many others that posted here, we (2 of us) recycle what we can and compost what we can, and our garbage can is half-full every week, at best. If you have no use for the compost yourself, donate it to your neighbors flower garden. Duh.
