Katz Kicks Kid in the Face During Soccer Game

Here’s how you don’t win an election.

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz took part in a charity soccer game Monday afternoon with city councillors and immigrant youth. It was going well until he smoked a kid in the face with his foot. That’s kind of frowned upon in the soccer community.

Kid must be a Judy supporter.

    Mike Reply:

Holy crap you fools! Look at the guy! He doesn’t exactly ooze athleticism. He got caught up in the moment and was trying to have some fun. He made a mistake. It was not malicious/intentional. He’s a goofy older guy who did a goofy thing. Why does every little mistake people make these days have to be so blown out of proportion?

  • LovesAGoodMetaphor

The metaphoric value of this is undeniable, but from a pragmatic point of view, why would any adult play so hard to win against a team of kids?

Note to Katz: the PR benefit is in playing with kids, not beating them!

If you ask me, this is yet more evidence Katz only cares about himself and winning for his own benefit… and the benefit of his friends, which we can be assured include no recent immigrants, youth, pro-community and public resource supporters, or any of the other things this summer sports program game represents.

    Mr. Funny Reply:

Your kidding right. For goodness sake, the guy was just playing soccer with kids. Give the guy a break! Your making something out of nothing.

    LovesAGoodMetaphor Reply:

So, when you’re playing with kids half your height, you don’t put extra care into making sure your far larger size isn’t going to lead to this very sort of thing? Sure, stuff happens, but how long did it take him to notice and react? Ridiculous.

    phil.W Reply:

sadly I completely agree with WPG, Sam doesn’t play nice and its most assured here that he would never ever make a policy that is beneficial to new immigrants which almost always are helpful only to his buddies with businesses

    idiots Reply:

WOW unbelievable the trash in Winnipeg that would connect this accident to how the Mayor handles his business. I think he is a great mayor and who cares about this accident your all a bunch of losers with no life if you have time to find a problem with this.

    phil.W Reply:

exactly how much good has Sam as leader of the city done for it while he has been Mayor? I can’t recall any instances that have benefited me or anyone I know. Guess because I don’t own a multi million dollar firm I will continue to get the short end of the stick. I can however point to several such instances where I have felt as a taxpayer like that kid felt after being trampled upon by some assclown who didn’t even know he was kicking the little guy

    wpgguy Reply:

I would have been pissed if I played against City Council and they didn’t even try. People get hurt in sports, this kid just got a little kick to the face. It could have been worse. Sam got a yellow card, ain’t that enough.

    Stop trying to dissect everything.

    lovesagoodmetaphor Reply:

Everything could always be worse, and sometimes it heads that way precisely because people are sitting around doing nothing until “worse” actually arrives. But then it’s too late and everyone’s screwed. Great.
    … *sigh*

    Some Guy Reply:

As someone with no knowledge of who this guy is or what any of his policies are, I want to point out that this does not represent anything about him except that he is capable of making a mistake.

The kid was fine, and he will probably get some nice apology memento, like a signed soccer ball or something dumb like that.

Shame on everyone who is trying to force their political views under a funny video. You are all buzz-kills. It is an election year and the guy accidentally kicked someone, that makes it funny.

    Really? Reply:

I’ve never liked Katz, but you’re a freaking d-bag “lovesagoodmetaphor”. There’s no point in dwelling on an accident. Even those of us who actively oppose him are not bothering with this. People like you are the reason that politics suck. Quit b****ing about “metaphors” you claim to see online and do something about it.

    ChillBro Reply:

I think you are taking a random accident in a sport way too far. Does Sam Katz seem like the jock type? Throw any awkward older man who doesn’t play sports into that situation, 9/10 times they are going to do something silly. This isn’t a conspiracy, so cool them jets.

    LoL U Goof Reply:

    @ Lovesagoodmetaphor

You better be joking? You are making a problem about this? Why dont you look at it as the city council is actually taking time to play soccer with kids? Jealous you didn’t get to? Now now thats a very common accident in soccer anyways, and If you were playing, I’d kick you in the head.

    lovesagoodmetaphor Reply:

    @ LoL U Goof

You’d kick me in the head?

What the hell are you, other than a violent moron. I can’t believe you took the time to write that? What’s wrong with you?

    (Probably Jenny Gerbasi’s kid)

Gotta love Winnipeggers, smugly who post this to Facebook as if it is some sort of political statement.

I love how he keeps playing even after he OBVIOUSLY kicked a child in the face…….

    Katz plays DIRTY!!

  • DowntownWpg

A bit creepy the way Gord Steeves is laughing about it in the background right after it happens. It only becomes funny after learning that the kid will be okay.

  • Bryan

A simple accident. Really low class to promote it as if it means anything, whether you’re media or a blogger).

  • Katz, Samual

 Judy just better watch out.

  • http://www.udonknowshi.com King

I like how he feigned concern once he realized he kick a kid in the face.

  • Tracy

Ouch! Good for the mayor to get out and play with the kids! Give him a break. It was an accident and he obviously felt bad after he realized what had happened.

  • http://theorangerod.blogspot.com Orange Rod Blog

It was an accident, but it’s pathetic how he kept playing even after he kicked the kid in the face.

  • http://arsenisms.blogspot.com/ Fat Arse

Ah, Katz is clearly a fan of the late 80′s skit “Boot to the Head”. Given the circumstances and Katz`s insane need to come out on top at every turn, what else could we expect of `hizzoner`? At least he didn’t kick the poor child in the nuts!

  • Jasb

    You’re playing CHILDREN!

We’re all at the same skill level….

  • Broadsword

I think he was just really into having fun, and got too much into the game, and didn’t even see where his foot landed, innocent mistake but still. S**t happens.

That kid’s got a bright future in soccer, he already dives like a pro!

I guess Katz is a pimp in more ways than one.

What I find interesting about this is the timeline of the credit to this video:

    1) This morning, it’s a video with the large ChrisD logo giving credit to global in a small font beneath.

    2) This afternoon it was with a name key giving credit to Global

    3) This evening Chris is no longer taking credit for the footage, instead running the clip from Global’s site embedded on his site.

Methinks that a Global shooter took umbrage to the perception created that it was ChrisD footage?

    Chris D dot ca Reply:

We always had a text credit to Global Winnipeg under the video from the moment we posted it. We never took credit for it.

Earlier this morning we were hosting it on our own server while waiting for clearance to upload it to a third party provider. Once Global gave us approval, we switched the video to Vimeo in HTML5 format. It was also becoming a bandwidth issue.

The ChrisD.ca logo appears automatically with any video we upload to Vimeo. It’s a template.

A few hours later Global realized the video was going viral and wanted to track their own video metrics. To do this, they requested we embed their own version of the video.

Global was very accommodating to us wanting to use the video. Kudos to them for shooting it in the first place.

Whether he is a bad mayor or a good mayor. That makes no difference here. Whether he is a bad man or a good man, that makes no difference here. Accidents happen. I am a physical education teacher, this stuff happens all the time. I find it funny that people take shots at him for this.

    Dan Reply:

OK, but in your phys ed. class, if something like this happened, you’d expect an apology at the very least, right? He never apologized to the kid. Would you let that fly in your class? Sorry, he IS a bad man, I think. He only indicated a desire to apologize when the video went viral!

Regardless of politics, his soccer playing needs work. It was a reckless kick at any level of the game against any players. You just don’t high kick a ball that another player is going to head unless you KNOW you can hit it before the other players heads it. It’s obvious that he kicked without regard or even awareness of the other player. In a real game such a kick would have earned him a red card.

Would I vote for him? Maybe. Would I let him play for me or against me or mine? No way!

  • Duke

I guess he plays dirty at anything he does…

  • Come on Katz….

Poor refugee kid. Survived civil wars at the hands of rebels to be taken down by winnipeg mayor!

  • Dan

The worst part is that he never even apologized to the kid. When this video surfaced on the internet he had a representative call the community centre to say that ‘he wanted to apologize’, but then he never followed up on it! Sorry folks, you’re right, it was an accident. But being a grown-up means stopping to help the kid, not just keeping on playing(which he did), and not even having the common courtesy to say sorry.
Frankly, as a Winnipegger, I feel like the jerk has been kicking us all in the face for the last two terms. He doesn’t even understand how politics really works. This is why he tries to spend earmarked federal money on unrelated projects (losing us a rapid transit system in the process), or getting caught giving himself or friends sweetheart deals in a politically dubious manner. Such as that parking lot. In my opinion the man is a crook.
