City of Winnipeg Adds New Diamond Lanes for Buses and Bikes

Beep! Beep! The City of Winnipeg has added additional diamond lanes for bus and bike traffic effective Monday.

What are diamond lanes?

They are designated lanes used only for buses and bicyclists during rush-hour, which is 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., and 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Other drivers are permitted to use the lanes only while making a right turn.

The new lanes are now in effect at the following locations:

  • Eastbound Regent Avenue between Rougeau Avenue and Plessis Road
  • Westbound Regent Avenue between Plessis Road and Rougeau Avenue
  • Southbound Henderson Highway between Hespeler Avenue and Riverton Avenue
  • Northbound McPhillips Street between Selkirk Avenue and Inkster Boulevard
  • Southbound McPhillips Street between Inkster Boulevard and Selkirk Avenue

Those motorists who are too good to drive in regular lanes and decide to travel in a diamond lane will have to pay out $125 and receive two demerit points.

Did you know?

  • Diamond Lanes were first introduced in Winnipeg in 1995
  • There are approximately 7 kilometres of reserved lanes covering 41 intersections
  • Diamond lanes are a commonly used transit priority measure used world wide

The diamond lanes on Regent are completely ridiculous and unneeded. There are only two buses that go down regent, and i have never seen any of them have to wait in traffic. If anything, they are the ones causing a backup because of frequent stops. Another waste of city money painting the roads and putting up posts designating the lane a ‘diamond’ lane
