Icy Roads Wreak Havoc with Manitobans

Mother Nature wasn’t too pleased with southern Manitoba on Monday, as a sheet of freezing rain layered roads everywhere. Highways were closed, vehicles sat in the ditch and even walking became a challenge. Meanwhile, the River Trail saw some intense competition as residents chose to skate on their own street, as seen in one photo below.

Take a look at these pics (click to enlarge) from around Winnipeg and the province on Monday. Unreal!

By mid-afternoon, main routes were slush after city crews worked to melt the ice. However, side streets still remain quite slippery.

The City of Winnipeg issued a press release notifying the public on the services affected by the weather, which include garbage and recycling collection.

A pair of skaters took to Highway 3 near Sanford to show just how icy it really was. Watch the videos below from the Free Press.

Those who did venture out on the roads were most likely regretting that decision, as dozens of vehicles ended up in the ditch.

A youthful resident of East St. Paul laced up the skates and took to the streets in this video that was posted on YouTube.

Yes, if only our precious city and province would salt and sand before and during an ice storm. Rather than the next day during the day when it is wasted. People should start phoning their MLA and Councillor and complain. But no they won’t because Manitobans are just wimps.
