On Screen Manitoba Applauds Steady Tax Film Credit

Posted by Brian Schultz

On Screen Manitoba is applauding the provincial government for the recent enhancement of its 30% all spend tax credit to stimulate film production in Manitoba.

“Provincial tax credit incentives and the equity fund allow Manitoba production companies to compete financially in a global context,” said Phyllis Laing, chair of On Screen Manitoba and CEO and president of Buffalo Gal Pictures. “Production incentives have also contributed to building highly skilled technical and creative professionals for the Manitoba industry.”

Saskatchewan has scrapped their film tax credit, but has proposed a non-refundable tax credit instead. On Monday, supporters of the film industry rallied outside the Saskatchewan legislature for the original credit’s return.

“The Government of Saskatchewan seems to be trying to address these new challenges through the recent announcement of a new non-refundable Film/TV and Digital Tax Credit (FTDC) formula; however, it strays so far from current industry practice it seems unlikely to stimulate film and television production in that province,” On Screen Manitoba said in a release.

A dance trio from Sagkeeng First Nation are the winners of “Canada’s Got Talent” and a cool $100,000 cash.

Sagkeeng’s Finest — hailing from Fort Alexander, Manitoba — received the highest number of votes for their performance on the Citytv reality show. Besides the giant cheque, the teens also won a brand new Nissan GT-R and an all-inclusive trip to the island of Tobago, a chance to perform in a Las Vegas show, and the title of Canada’s Most Talented Act.

Vincent O’Laney, 17, and brothers Brandon, 18, and Dallas Courchene, 17, auditioned in Winnipeg back in September 2011. In Monday’s night’s live finals, Sagkeeng’s Finest performed to a mash-up of Raghav’s “Fire” and Metro Station’s “Shake It,” with a fusion of traditional clogging and tap.

“Sagkeeng’s Finest is a uniquely-Canadian talent that struck a chord with communities across the country,” said executive producer Ed Robinson. “The First Nation’s traditional dance trio are outstanding role models — not only for their community, but for all Canadian youth.”

Marty Gold Back on the Air with Weekly Shaw TV Show

Marty Gold (CHRISD.CA FILE)

Winnipeg radio host-turned-podcaster Marty Gold has a new outlet to take politicians to task.

The former KICK FM broadcaster will host “City Circus” on Shaw TV beginning tonight as part of a 13-week series on the community access channel.

The show — featuring local political cartoonist Graham Hnatiuk of Progressive Winnipeg – will highlight citizen journalism and include pundits and insiders who will discuss civic and provincial affairs catering to Winnipeggers. A one-hour town hall special will cap off the 30-minute series after its run.

“Community access television provides a chance for citizen journalists to provide balance to mainstream media reporting that is dominated by 12 second soundbites and dumbed-down news coverage,” Gold said. “Since the civic election, Winnipeg has seen a shift towards increasing demands by taxpayers for public consultation, transparency and accountability from politicians.”

Gold spent four years at 92.9 KICK FM on the airwaves at Red River College before being let go in 2010. He currently hosts “The Great Canadian Talk Show” podcast and writes for various news publications.

“City Circus” will air every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., with reruns airing throughout the week.

Manitoba Music Industry Heading to L.A.

Posted by David Klassen

Members of Manitoba’s talented music industry are headed south to rub shoulders with industry movers and shakers in Los Angeles.

Four Manitoba artists and entrepreneurs from several Manitoba-based companies will make their way south to do business with some of the industry’s leading players at a market development event at the Canadian Consul General’s Official Residence on May 29.

“Los Angeles is a major market of interest for Manitoba companies and represents the best avenue for accessing the ever-growing area of film, television, trailer, and game placements for music,” said Sara Stasiuk, Manitoba Music’s executive director. “The connections made at events like these are key to helping our talented and accomplished artists and entrepreneurs achieve the next level of success.”

Performers include JUNO award-winning singer/songwriter Ruth Moody, acoustic pop troubadour JP Hoe, up-and-coming pop act James Struthers, and indie upstarts The Treble.

The initiative allows Manitoba artists and companies to develop critical business contacts and expand to new markets. Manitoba Music is coordinated the trip in partnership with Manitoba Film and Music.

The lineup for the 30th annual Kidsfest will not disappoint the little ones.

The Dinosaur Petting Zoo brings kids inches away from the steely claws of the most magnificent beings ever to roam the earth, all controlled by puppeteers at Australia’s Erth Inc. Accompanied by some fascinating fossil-facts, told with heart and humour, the zoo hypnotizes audiences with its complex creatures.

Other highlights include children’s performers Jake Chenier, acoustic/bluegrass children’s musician Aaron Burnett, comedic daredevil Gustavo the Impossibilist, and others.
