Made-in-Winnipeg App Gives Users ‘Musical Democracy’

Anthm iPhone app (HANDOUT)

A new Winnipeg-made smartphone app for the Apple iPhone allows users to control the music being played in their location when they create or join location-based parties.

Anthm is a free app powered by Rdio, a streaming music service, and can handle requests from any of the 12 million songs available on the on-demand service.

“Musical democracy is our way of giving people control over the music they hear in public places,” said Ben Myers, co-founder of Anthm. “Today’s technologies are too powerful for people to be listening to songs they don’t like. Anthm finally puts people in control of the music.”

Anthm’s voting mechanics allow people to vote songs in the queue up or down, with the highest voted song becoming the next to play. Called a “21st century jukebox,” it gives people the opportunity to collaboratively curate an evolving party playlist.

The app is free to download at AnthmApp.com.

Folklorama Launches Smartphone App for iOS

Folklorama is making it easier this year for people to find their way to pavilions.

Organizers behind the annual multicultural event launched a smartphone app on Tuesday — designed for iPhone and iPad. The free app is available for download from the App Store, and a BlackBerry version will be available soon.

The app mirrors information found in the printed Folklorama Travel Guide, listing pavilion hours, show times, and added features for users to interact with the app. Users can also rate and track pavilions they’ve visited in the MyFolklorama section.

The GPS-enabled app can also provide directions to all of the pavilions and show users the pavilions nearest to their location.

The app was designed by Winnipeg-based Honest Agency.

Folklorama runs July 31 to August 13. A launch previewing this year’s pavilions will be held Thursday at noon under the canopy at The Forks.

iPhone Case Includes Slide Out Bottle Opener

Two Australian entrepreneurs have come up with an idea that will keep iPhone owners refreshed whenever they want a beverage.

Called Opena, the device is a hardshell case that fits around an iPhone and includes a trusty bottle opener on the back.

“Basically, Australians are fairly heavy drinkers, as you may or may not know,” Chris Peters, a Melbourned-based industrial designer told news agency Reuters in an interview. Peters created the concept with the help of former toolmaker Rob Ward.

Peters said there was a few glitches in the early stages of testing, such as making sure foam from opening a beer didn’t damage the iPhone, didn’t scratch the casing, and to make sure there was no pressure put on the iPhone from using the opener.

Feedback for Opena has been mostly positive, but there have been a few skeptics who have voiced their opinions on the company’s Facebook page.

MTS to Offer Unlimited Data with iPhone 4: Report

Posted by David Klassen

MTS hasn’t officially unveiled plans and pricing for the iPhone 4 just yet, but Apple watchers have apparently found out what customers can expect on April 26.

According to iPhoneinCanada.ca, when MTS introduces the iPhone 4, they will offer an unlimited data plan for $74.99 a month, or $69.99 a month when bundled with other services.

The plan is rumoured to include 350 daytime minutes, and unlimited calling between MTS customers within Manitoba. Included features will be unlimited text/picture/video messaging and unlimited evenings and weekends beginning at 6 p.m.

The most popular feature of the plan is obviously the unlimited data, which will also give users the ability to tether.

Phone pricing will reportedly be based on a three-year contract at $159/$269 for the 16/32 GB model.

Critics argue signing a three-year contract for a device that’s nearly a year old is a bad move. The iPhone 5 is expected to come out in the fall.

MTS to Launch iPhone 4 on April 26

After announcing the iPhone 4 would eventually be coming to their network, MTS will bring the popular Apple smartphone to its customers on Tuesday, April 26.

“We are thrilled to be launching iPhone 4 and we know many of our customers have been patiently waiting for this day,” said MTS President Kelvin Shepherd. “With our unlimited data plans and free
access to all MTS Wi-Fi Hotspots, we believe our customers will benefit from the best iPhone tariffs in Manitoba.”

Pricing for the device hasn’t yet been released.

Apple has been rumoured to be holding off with their annual iPhone launch this summer to bring out a white iPhone 4, which has been held up due to production delays. Tech analysts believe the iPhone 5 will be released sometime in the fall, or early in 2012.

MTS to Begin Carrying the iPhone

MTS customers will get a treat when Manitoba’s largest wireless carrier begins selling the Apple iPhone 4 in the “coming months.”

In a brief news release Thursday, MTS didn’t provide many details about the launch, only to give a background on the phone itself.

Customers have been waiting patiently for the company to begin selling the device. Currently, only Rogers and Fido offer the iPhone in the province.

The debut of Apple’s smartphone will likely coincide with the launch of MTS’ HSPA network on March 31, which will handle newer devices at a faster speed. However, no definite date has been given.

No prices or information on data plans were released.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for MTS told ChrisD.ca, “At this time, we are not providing any further details on today’s announcement. As I am sure you can appreciate, the wireless market in Manitoba is very competitive and as a matter of course, we don’t comment on our product roadmap and plans.”

The announcement from MTS comes on the same day Verizon launches the iPhone on their network in the U.S., rivaling competitor AT&T, who had exclusivity on the device until recently.
