WINNIPEG – Christine Sinclair always has the spotlight on her, but the veteran captain says soccer fans should keep an eye on her young, talented teammates.

When Canada’s national women’s squad takes on Costa Rica Thursday in a friendly at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field, the roster will include a pair of 21-year-old best friends who earn good paycheques playing with high-calibre French clubs.

The third annual girls’ soccer camp led by Desiree Scott has raised $20,000 for KidSport Winnipeg.

The camp was held October 29-30 at the University of Winnipeg and included 135 kids aged five to 18.

“It’s crazy that we are already into the third annual camp, time certainly flies when you’re having fun!” said Scott, KidSport Winnipeg athlete ambassador.

Fresh off her bronze medal performance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, soccer star and Winnipeg native Desiree Scott will hold her third annual soccer camp in support of KidSport Winnipeg.

Scott will mentor kids in the sport November 7-8 at the UNITED Health & RecPlex at the University of Winnipeg.

“Last year was a massive success and I had an awesome day on the field with all the girls that came out to become ‘Destroyers in the making’. I’m looking forward to this year’s camp which will be even bigger and better with lots to learn and enjoy,” the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist said in a release.

Winnipeg soccer star Desiree Scott will mentor young girls looking to enter the sport through an inaugural KidSport soccer camp.

“Giving back is something I pride myself on doing and working with kids in the community is something I truly enjoy so I am looking forward to getting on the pitch with the girls and getting them to experience a little taste of what it’s like to train as a professional soccer player,” Scott said in a release.

Winnipeg Counting Down to FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015

WINNIPEG — The countdown is on until the best women’s soccer players in the world descend on Winnipeg for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

The city is hosting a number of matches along with other Canadian cities during the month-long tournament.

An official 10-foot-high clock counting down the days to the start of the matches was unveiled Friday at The Forks.

WINNIPEG — The turf at Investors Group Field has been transformed from a football field to a soccer pitch for Thursday’s Canada vs. U.S. women’s friendly.

The two national teams completed their last training session Wednesday afternoon under a cloudy sky before the rain began.

“I think it’s going to be the Desi (Desiree) Scott show tomorrow,” Canada head coach Jon Herdman said during a news conference. “It’s a proud moment for the team — we’ve all got a massive smile on our face, because the local girl gets to come home.”

Scott is Canada’s Winnipeg-born midfielder and a product of the Notts County Ladies in England. The former University of Manitoba Bison has been the star attraction this week as she makes the media rounds to promote the event.

Canadian National Women’s Team midfielder Desiree Scott has been transferred to Notts County Ladies of The FA Women’s Super League in England.

The Winnipeg athlete was a valuable member of the inaugural FC Kansas City squad that held their opponents to only 22 goals all season.

Scott started 46 of the 71 matches she has appeared in for her home country and helped her team win the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Canadian Women’s National Team player Desiree Scott has been named a Team KidSport Athlete Ambassador for KidSport Winnipeg.

Scott currently plays for FC Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League and is a former University of Manitoba Bison. She also won bronze as part of the team that competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“Sports have been a huge part of my life and I am thankful that I now have the opportunity to help KidSport get more kids playing the sports they love,” Scott said. “Without KidSport’s assistance I truly believe I’d have missed out on many of my life’s experiences, especially the Olympic Games.”

KidSport Winnipeg and Scott plan to hold a soccer camp for girls in October 2013.
