Mark Scheifele Golf Classic, Hockey Camp Raise $190K for KidSport

An annual golf classic presented by Winnipeg Jets’ Mark Scheifele helped raise $190,000 for KidSport Winnipeg earlier this summer.

The 2017 Mark Scheifele Golf Classic at Niakwa Country Club combined fundraising efforts with an annual two-day Hockey Camp at Bell MTS Iceplex.

Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is returning this season to host the golf tournament bearing his name.

The 2017 Mark Scheifele Golf Classic supports KidSport Winnipeg, with all proceeds going to pay registration fees for kids from financially disadvantaged families participate in sport.

Women’s Golf Makes a Return to Bison Sports Program

WINNIPEG — After a seven-year absence, the University of Manitoba will have a women’s golf team again.

Starting up next fall, the Bisons will have five women on the team after shuttering the program in 2010 due to a lack of female golfers in the province. It was originally formed in 2001.

“We are confident that there will be lots of interested young girls who would like to play golf on the Bison women’s golf team for quite some time,” said men’s head coach Garth Goodbrandson.

Winnipeg Golf Courses Opening for the Season

Golf BallA trip to the links may be in store for many Winnipeg golfers this weekend, with most of the city’s courses opening to the public.

Harbour View Golf Course and Recreation Complex (9 holes) and Kildonan Park Golf Course (18 holes) both open on Sunday.

Windsor Park Golf Course opens on Monday, April 18, with Crescent Drive Golf Course opening on Tuesday.

Players Cup Donates $66K to Local Charities

The Players CupLocal children’s charities are the beneficiaries of more than $66,000 raised by The Players Cup golf tournament.

The PGA Tour Canada event has raised the funds in Winnipeg since the beginning of the year, which adds to the $400,000 generated for local charities since 2010.

“Our organization is honoured to be affiliated with a first class event like the Players Cup and to be a recipient of the Play Through Foundation,” said Ron Brown, CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg, one of the primary recipients of the funding.

“The level of support provided to us gives us more resources to provide additional opportunities to the children and youth we work with across Winnipeg.”

City Tees Up Winnipeg Golfing Smartphone App

Winnipeg Golf AppThe City of Winnipeg is putting tech at the fingertips of local golfers by launching a smartphone app for city-owned golf courses.

The free download — for Apple and Android devices — services the Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses.

Features include the ability to book tee times, get accurate GPS yardages for each shot and view a map of the courses. Other built-in bells and whistles are the option to build a player profile, check real-time leaderboards for other city golfers and receive current weather conditions.

Those who download the app between Tuesday, June 9 and Monday, June 15 can receive $5 off their green fee at either course.
