With balmy temperatures in the forecast this coming long weekend, Manitobans may be hitting the beaches earlier than normal.

Three Manitoba beach destinations are now among 26 beaches and seven marinas in Canada to be awarded the Blue Flag this year — a world-renowned eco-certification. Each beach and marina receiving the designation must meet high international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services.

A scary incident for some beachgoers last weekend turned out to be a false alarm, but RCMP responded accordingly.

Officers were called to Grand Beach on Sunday just after 2 p.m. about a man seen with what appeared to be a handgun tucked into the waistband of his shorts.

Officers from the Selkirk detachment responded with tactical gear, including rifles and Tasers.

The 34-year-old Winnipeg man was questioned about the device, which turned out to be a handgun replica cell phone case.

Manitoba Hydro to Cut Power to Grand Beach Area

Manitoba HydroCottagers in and around the Grand Beach area will be without power next Friday, October 24.

Manitoba Hydro has planned an interruption to electrical service between 8 a.m. and noon, affecting approximately 2,800 customers. The area under the planned outage stretches from Beaconia Beach north to Belair.

Crews will be trimming and removing trees along the sub-transmission line supplying electricity to the area.

Manitoba Cottagers to Be Without Power on Friday

Power to Manitoba Hydro customers in the Grand Beach and Victoria Beach areas will be cut off on Friday, October 10.

Hydro says crews will replace a damaged pole between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Approximately 6,000 customers will be affected by the outage, stretching from Beaconia Beach north to Victoria Beach and east along the Winnipeg River to the south shore portion of Fort Alexander. This includes Balsam Bay, Sunset Beach, Grand Marais, Grand Beach, Lester Beach, Belair, Hillside Beach, Albert Beach and Traverse Bay.

Feds Fund $70K in Renos to Grand Marais Heritage Wing

The federal government is funding a renovation of the Heritage Wing in the Grand Marais Community Central.

Selkirk-Interlake MP James Bezan made the $70,000 funding announcement Monday for the project.

The renovation of the Heritage Wing will include the construction of an acoustic ceiling, interior walls, new floors, display cases, and specialized cabinets. An electrical system and a security monitoring system will also be installed.

Two Manitoba beaches have made the list this year to fly the prestigious Blue Flag — an international eco-certification for beaches and marinas.

West Grand Beach and Winnipeg Beach are among the 24 new additions recognized by Environmental Defence for achieving international standards in four categories: water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services.
