Unionized Winnipeg Airports Authority Employees Vote in Favour of Strike

Unionized workers employed by the Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) have voted in favour of striking if mediation between the workers and their employer fall apart later this week.

The two sides are currently in last ditch mediation talks with the assistance of a federally-appointed mediator and the vote by workers means employees will be in a position to strike as of 12:01 a.m. the morning of Saturday, July 22, if an agreement can’t be reached.

Unionized Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) employees will picket outside Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport Friday as contract negotiations head into mediation starting next week.

A media advisory sent out by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) Thursday says the demonstration will start at noon and is being held to protest contracting out and to show support for the bargaining team as they head into mediation.

A dozen Winnipeg mascots will invade James Richardson International Airport today to help Tourism Winnipeg kick off Tourism Week.

“The annual mascot invasion orchestrated by Tourism Winnipeg is a proven hit with travel-weary passengers as they deplane, and it also increases interest in an array of notable local tourism experiences,” said Dayna Spiring, president and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg Inc.

Travellers flying to Hamilton, Ontario from Winnipeg and vice versa can now do so directly on WestJet.

The airline launched its non-stop service between the two cities on Tuesday with a departing flight from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

“These routes mean lower fares and reduced travel times for Hamiltonians visiting friends and family in Halifax, Edmonton and Winnipeg and vice versa,” said Brian Znotins, WestJet vice-president, network planning.

MTS Working on Wireless Outage Near the Airport

MTSMTS technicians are working to fix a service disruption near Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport.

A fire Thursday afternoon damaged a cellular tower at the airport, affecting customers in the surrounding vicinity. Disruptions include the inability to use wireless voice, text or data services. The outage is expected to last until sometime Friday at the earliest.

Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries says the closure coincides with the expiry of their current lease with the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

WINNIPEG — The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada has secured $1.2 million from the federal government for its new facility at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport.

The museum will be a new and sophisticated facility to celebrate the impact of flying and aviation on Canada’s culture and heritage.
