Rookie Riders Gear Up for Biking to the Viking

A group of 191 first-time riders are preparing to cycle in this weekend’s 26th annual Biking to the Viking MS Bike Tour.

The two-day tour on Saturday and Sunday takes riders on an 85-kilometre trip from Stonewall to Gimli and back, while raising funds for the MS Society of Canada, Manitoba division.

“Our returning riders tell very fond stories about their first year, and we know that this year’s rookie riders are going to have an amazing experience,” said says Darcey Hill, major events manager for the MS Society of Canada.

This year’s 170-kilometre bike ride to end multiple sclerosis is hoping to raise $500,000 in donations for the MS Society of Canada.

The annual Biking to the Viking MS Bike Tour will bring out 600 cyclists, who will pedal from Stonewall to Gimli and back over the span of two days on August 22-23.

Last year’s ride was cut short due to inclement weather and high winds, putting an end to the second day of the tour.

MS Society Launching Two New Manitoba Bike Tours

MS Society of CanadaThe Manitoba division of the MS Society of Canada is rolling out two new bike tours for 2015.

The Winter MS Bike Tour will take place Saturday, February 7 at Clear Lake, Riding Mountain National Park, and the Turtle Mountain Trail is set for Sunday, July 12 at Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.

“After the success of the 25th anniversary of the Biking to the Viking event where we broke our fundraising record by raising $532,000, we’re really excited to bring two new bike tours to Manitoba,” said Donna Boyd, president of the MS Society of Canada, Manitoba Division.

Weather Cancels Second Day of ‘Biking to the Viking’

MS Society of CanadaHigh winds and thunderstorms have cancelled the second day of the 25th anniversary Biking to the Viking MS Bike Tour.

Riders were to leave from Gimli today and head back to Stonewall, where they departed from on Saturday as part of the fundraising event.

“The safety of our cyclists are our top priority,” said Donna Boyd, MS Society president. “After consulting with route marshalls, our expert cyclists with our bike shops, and finally the RCMP, we have determined that the road is not safe for cyclists and that we cannot ensure their safety given the weather conditions.”

‘Biking to the Viking’ MS Tour Marking 25 Years

MS Society of CanadaAround 700 cyclists will make a 170 km trek across Manitoba this weekend for the 25th anniversary of the Biking to the Viking MS Bike Tour.

Supporting the cause in ending multiple sclerosis, the ride will depart Saturday from the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in Stonewall. From there, riders will head to Gimli after strolling through Balmoral, Teulon, Donnottar, and Sandy Hook.

They will stay overnight in Gimli before cycling back to Stonewall on Sunday morning to cross the finish line between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

If you don’t already have lunch plans, chowing down on a burger will greatly help out the MS Society of Canada.

The organization has teamed up with A&W Canada for the sixth annual Cruisin’ to End MS day.

One dollar from every Teen Burger sold across Canada today will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. In its first five years, Cruisin’ to End MS has raised $5 million to support people living with MS and MS research in Canada.

Celebrated Olympian Cindy Klassen will join the fundraising efforts this year for the 25th anniversary of the MS Biking to the Viking.

The six-time Olympic speed skating medallist will be the celebrity rider for the 170 km recreational bike tour from August 23-24. The ride begins at 8 a.m. in Stonewall, Manitoba, taking cyclists to Gimli where they will enjoy a dinner celebration before returning to Stonewall the next day.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cindy to join in our cause and hope that Manitobans of all ages and cycling experiences will be inspired to take part in the 25th anniversary MS Bike Tour,” said MS Society president Donna Boyd. “We have teams made up of families, groups of friends, and co-workers of all kinds, coming together to take part in the ride.”

‘Cruisin’ for a Cause Day’ to Fund MS Research

A&W Cruisin' for a Cause Day

The MS Society of Canada will benefit from Cruisin’ for a Cause Day today when A&W customers purchase a Teen Burger.

One dollar from every burger purchased nationwide will be donated to the MS Society, which helps fund multiple sclerosis research. Customers can also purchase counter cut-outs at $1, $2, and $5 price points to show their support.

Festivities are planned at the Polo Park A&W between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., where customers can also enter to win a seat of seats from the old Canad Inns Stadium.

A&W and its customers raised more than $3 million in the first four years, including $1.4 million during last year’s Cruisin’ for a Cause campaign. Funds raised will help the MS Society fund vital MS research and government advocacy, as well as financial support and wellness programs that empower Canadians affected by the disease.

For every person who RSVPs to the Cruisin’ for a Cause Facebook event or tweets using the hashtag #CruisinForACause, A&W will donate $1 (up to $20,000).

MS Bike Tour Gearing Up for Stonewall-Gimli Trek

MS Society of CanadaMore than 700 cyclists will take to Manitoba’s roads this weekend for the 24th annual Biking to the Viking MS Bike Tour.

Part of the MS Society of Canada’s national MS Bike program, the event on Saturday and Sunday (August 24-25) is one of the largest cycling series in North America.

The ride will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in Stonewall. Participants will then gear up for a 160 km round-trip trek down the province’s highways to Gimli, where they will spend the night. The series picks back up on Sunday with a return trip to Stonewall.

About 2,000 people laced up for the MS Walk on Sunday at the University of Manitoba.

The 2 km and 5 km walk raised funds for the society which aims to fight multiple sclerosis and included 2013 Community MS Ambassador and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Kelly Butler.
