A new documentary looking at the life of former Winnipeg Blue Bomber great Ken Ploen will have sports fans glued to the screen at the Park Theatre on Monday.

“Ken Ploen Way” was produced with MTS Stories from Home by documentary filmmaker Sam Vint.

The 30-minute film came about after Vint spotted Ploen at a fundraiser and realized such a documentary on his life hadn’t been produced.

A benefit concert held Tuesday night exceeded the fundraising goal of a local organization to assist newcomer refugees to Winnipeg.

The South Osborne Syrian Refugee Initiative raised $60,788.

“We had a donation station set up at the Park Theatre and could provide live updates to the GoFundMe page as concertgoers made their donations,” said fundraising co-chair Ian Mattey.

Comedian and former “Kids in the Hall” star Scott Thompson will perform at the Park Theatre next week.

Thompson will do two, one-hour stand-up comedy shows on Friday, January 22.

The live Winnipeg stage production of popular cult classic “The Rocky Horror Show” kicks off this week at the Park Theatre. A run of nine shows begins October 22 with a stellar all-Winnipeg cast, produced by the same team that put on last year’s sell-out success “Evil Dead: The Musical.”

The production is a musical with lyrics, book and music by Richard O’Brien. It tells the story of a newly-engaged couple getting caught in a storm and ending up at the home of a mad, transvestite scientist.

The Ontario foursome will be in the city on Sunday, November 29.

Winnipeg pop and R&B artist Tiffany Ponce hasn’t slowed down since bursting onto the local music scene three years ago.

The singer-songwriter is about to release her second album, Gratitude, on August 8 with a CD release party at The Park Theatre.

“I want to keep creating good music. I want more and more people to be touched, inspired or moved by it,” Ponce said. “With the music that I’m writing and putting out now, I’ve kind of found a greater purpose. I want to empower and help other people to pursue their passions and achieve their goals.”

Cat Film Festival to Fundraise for Winnipeg Humane Society

KittensCat owners have long claimed the Internet as their domain, and now the best videos online will be played at the Park Theatre.

The 2015 Just for Cats Internet Film Festival will be held Wednesday, June 10.

The one-hour festival is a fundraiser for the Winnipeg Humane Society, which takes in more than 5,000 cats every year.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with door prizes and a raffle available. The festival gets underway at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10.
