Two more comedians have been added to this year’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival lineup.
Tommy Chong will host the Good Neighbours gala on Friday, April 7 at Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
This year’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival will kick off a few nights earlier than usual, but that’s because there’s more show to fill.
The 15th annual festival has a new artistic director at the reins, but promises the same laughs as always April 3-10.
“I am new to the gig,” jokes artistic director Lara Rae. “But I am happy to continue the tradition with a lineup that is very special and star-studded. And we have really tried hard to reflect and celebrate not just our anniversary, but the positive new voices that are being heard in our community and our culture.”
Nominees for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival’s first awards show have been revealed.
The Mics take place Sunday, April 12 at the Club Regent Event Centre, recognizing the best in comedy.
Nominees include Erica Sigurdson, Rebecca Kohler and Winnipeg’s Chantel Marostica in the best female standup category, and on the best male side, Graham Chittenden, Charlie Demers, Derek Edwards and David Pryde.
Would you like some whine with that cheese? That’s the theme surrounding this year’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival. Sort of.
The charming wit and dry humour of comedian and WCF artistic director Al Rae announced the headliners Thursday to anchor the 14th annual festival.
“As the song says, ‘It’s a very good year,’” Rae said. “Like a great vineyard, we have something for every taste and price range, so drink up the comedy — I’m sure you’ll be thirsty for more!”
Ottawa is backing the 2015 and 2016 Winnipeg Comedy Festival, providing $50,000 each year to the Gas Station Arts Centre to run its annual event.
“The Winnipeg Comedy Festival is one of Manitoba’s well-known cultural events, and each year it attracts thousands of spectators,” said Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, in a statement on Wednesday.
“This brings significant economic benefits to both Winnipeg and rural communities, while enriching the cultural tapestry of our city, our province and our country.”

Two more comedians have been added to the lineup for this year’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
TV funnyman Tom Cavanagh and rising stand-up star Phil Hanley will have audiences bursting with laughter this April.
Canadian-born Cavanagh, also the former “Ed” star, will appear at the Future Show gala, taking place Friday, April 11 at 9:15 p.m. at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
The Winnipeg Comedy Festival wants you to die laughing — at least metaphorically. Laugh Yourself to Death is the theme for this year’s festival, which will give audiences a lethal dose of comedy from April 7-13.
Now in its not-so-unlucky 13th year, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival has assembled a roster of comedians sure to tickle the funny bones of Winnipeggers.
Film and TV star Tom Green will perform at one of the galas on Saturday, April 12, showcasing the packed lineup of similarly singular talents, including festival regular Jon Steinberg.
“Match Game” host Darrin Rose is also scheduled to perform, as he turns Pantages Playhouse into his own personal man-cave, exploring macho attitudes and male ego at the “Bro Show.”
The Winnipeg Comedy Festival has added comedian Elvira Kurt to its already jam-packed lineup.
Kurt will perform Thursday, April 11 at the Gas Station Arts Centre, in which a roster of LGBTT comics will share personal stories and experiences. Hosted by local powerhouse Chantel Marostica, the show features queer-friendly musings from the likes of Darcy Michael, Martha Chaves, Clare Lawlor, Carmen Stockton and WCF co-founder Al Rae.
Tickets for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, running April 8-14, are available now.
