The cost of owning a dog in Winnipeg could get a bit more pricey if a proposed fee hike is approved.

It all boils down to the cost of a license, which is currently at $22.50 for a spayed/neutered dog and $45 for a non-spayed/neutered dog.

Under the proposed hike, the fees would jump from $22.50 to $30 and from $45 to $60.

The Winnipeg Humane Society has been very vocal on these proposed hikes, citing that responsible pet owners who do get their animals spayed and neutered should be rewarded, not penalized.

The issue will be discussed on Friday during a City of Winnipeg committee meeting.

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 — The cost of licensing your dog will only rise by $2.50 this year to $25 if your animal is spayed or neutered. The proposed hike to $60 if your dog isn’t fix was approved.
