More than half of Winnipeg School Division schools are getting surveillance cameras by the end of the year. The move comes after schools requested the trustees find more than $300,000 in the budget for the equipment to be installed at 16 more schools.
Some of the cameras will be equipped with night vision, and will monitor staff and students both inside and outside school buildings. The hope is to deter petty crime and improve school safety.
The project will mean 40 of 77 Winnipeg School Division schools will have closed circuit television (CCTV) equipment and surveillance cameras by the end of 2009.
