An elderly couple was swept away on Sunday evening while crossing the Woody River, about 450 km northwest of Winnipeg.
Mary Silverthorn‘s body was discovered by searchers, but her husband, 82-year-old Glen Silverthorn, is still missing. Officials called off the search for his body late Monday night.
Searchers found the couple’s empty Buick near a river crossing and the body of a 79-year-old woman downstream.
Suspicions on the couple’s whereabouts grew when they didn’t show up for Easter dinner Sunday evening in nearby Bowsman.
RCMP said the couple was driving across a ford crossing — a shallow spot on the river — when their car was swept into the Woody River by gushing flood water.
The couple was from Birch River and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this fall.
