The City of Winnipeg is reminding residents not to remove their dikes just yet. River levels in Winnipeg remain very high, and when river levels permit, the City will remove and dispose of sandbags used in protection from high river levels, Mayor Sam Katz announced today.
Sandbags that have not come in contact with river water will be made available to the public; more information will be provided in the coming weeks.
The City is also warning citizens to take extreme caution around bodies of water, such as rivers, streams, creeks, ditches, and retention ponds. Strong currents and fast moving, ice-cold water can be deadly.
