Comedy Show Honours Late Winnipeg Journalist

May 4, 2009 5:42 AM | Entertainment

The BS Comedy PlayersA comedy show is honouring a late Winnipeg journalist this Friday at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Arlene Billinkoff passed away last month, but she is not being forgotten as The BS Comedy Players dedicate their inaugural show to Arlene, also one of its key writers.

“Arlene was a part of (the Winnipeg Press Club’s) Beer & Skits for over twenty years, and was one of the first women to ever be a part of the show,” explained BS Comedy Players Marketing Director Corey Quintaine. “She was also one of the founding members of our current troupe, attending our first organizational meeting last year. She was a big part of our BS family, and we wanted to remember her by dedicating the show to her memory. I know she will be at the show in spirit.”

Billinkoff was one of the first female members of the Winnipeg Press Club. Even after her retirement, thanks to her contributions writing Beer & Skits, her voice was still heard by local politicians for many years. Premier Gary Doer, when interviewed regarding her passing, mentioned her writing contributions to the show, saying that Billinkoff often had the most inside information. The political satire show remained one of her passions, even as her health faltered.

“When Arlene was diagnosed with cancer, this year’s writing committee sent the script over with an invitation to pitch in and help,” said BS performer and writing committee member Donald Benham. “Arlene met the challenge, took out a pencil and read through every word. She became so absorbed in the writing and editing that she told her mother, ‘I don’t feel the pain any more.'”

Billinkoff’s close family and friends have been invited to this year’s outrageous political satire show, and a page in the show’s program will be dedicated to her memory.
