Assiniboia DownsFriday night for horse racing fans just got a bit dull. Assiniboia Downs has announced the cancellation of live racing on Friday nights due to a lack of entries.

“Although spring training conditions were at times challenging, we didn’t miss  a significant number of training days,” Assiniboia Downs director of operations Darren Dunn said. “We provided access to our indoor, climate-controlled Equiciser as early as Feb. 14 to offer the maximum amount of training time. We simply have not had the support from our horsemen at the entry box. With more than 750 horses on the grounds, this is not the position we should be in at this point in the season.”

Racing will continue as scheduled on Saturday, May 30, with eight races.

Winnipeg’s track isn’t the only one with a lack of sufficient entries. Other tracks in North America, notably Hollywood Park and Golden Gate in California have been experiencing declines. Both have been forced to cancel race days and both are now offering a shorter week of racing.
