“Painted” Thoroughbred Making Local Racing Debut

June 12, 2009 7:52 AM | Sports

Ellusive Spell - Painted Thoroughbred HorseHorse racing fans are in for a bit of a treat tonight at Assiniboia Downs. We’ve all seen grey, white and black horses, but how about a “painted” horse?

Ellusive Spell, trained by Emile Corbel, is the only Frame Overo painted thoroughbred in all of Canada. Frame Overo refers to the gene that gives the horse’s appearance a “painted” effect. The 3-year-old colt is officially listed as a dark bay but has large areas of white throughout. Only two lines of thoroughbreds carry the gene that causes the paint-like colouring.

This unique thoroughbred will take to the track in the third raise against six other maidens. Those fans considering betting on this unique horse should be aware that he’s a longshot at 15 to 1.
