The Winnipeg Goldeyes have lost shortstop Wes Long for likely the entire season. Long suffered a fractured left ankle during last night’s game against the Schaumburg Flyers.
“Flyers centre fielder Travis Ezi hit a ground ball to Winnipeg first baseman Cody Ehlers, who stepped on his base for the second out and then fired to shortstop Wes Long to get catcher Richard Mercado at second for the inning-ending double play. In attempting to break up the double play, Mercado slid hard and took out Long,” the team said today.
The Goldeyes’ win of 16-4 last night was the biggest of the year, but they also suffered their greatest loss by losing Long, who was set to play in the Northern League All-Star Game next week.
After losing their best shortstop, the Goldeyes activated infielder Brent Metheny, who has been out of action with a calf injury since June 14.
The team wraps up their three-game stint against Schaumburg today at 4 p.m. with a special celebration in honour of Canada’s 142nd birthday.
