The driver of a fuel tanker was killed on impact last night when his rig blew a back tire, causing the vehicle to lose control and hit a guardrail. It happened at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night about 11 km west of Roblin on Highway 5 at the Lake of the Prairies bridge near the Saskatchewan Border.
The fuel truck caught on fire and was sent down into the water and rocks below.
The identity of the driver has yet to be confirmed.
Authorities have Highway 5 closed to traffic for most of the day while the investigation continues. Traffic is being re-routed south to Russell.
UPDATE 3:45 p.m. — The fuel tanker truck is almost completely removed from the scene and Highway 5 is expected to be reopen by 6 p.m. Identification of the driver is ongoing.
