LeVar BurtonAfter 26 years on the air, the popular children’s series “Reading Rainbow” has been cancelled.

PBS decided to pull the plug due to a lack in funding to renew the rights of the books used on the program.

The show was known best for encouraging young children to read and making literacy fun.

Based out of TV station WNED in Buffalo, NY, the show’s honchos said competing technology was also a factor in the decision to end the show. With more children spending time behind other screens, besides television, the audience isn’t what it used to be.

Hosted by LeVar Burton, “Reading Rainbow” was the 3rd longest running children’s show next to “Sesame Street” and “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
