The citizen who shot video of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski being Tasered at the Vancouver airport in 2007 has received the first-ever Citizen Journalism Award.
The Canadian Journalists for Free Expression honoured Paul Pritchard on Tuesday for his footage and courage to fight a public battle to free the video from the RCMP.
The video was key evidence in the inquiry which later examined the circumstances surrounding Dziekanski’s death.
Pritchard said he doesn’t feel like a journalist by taking the video, but says he feels guilty for not trying to help Dziekanski that day.
Late Tuesday, it was reported that the RCMP officer who fired his Taser at Dziekanski — Const. Kwesi Millington — is suing the CBC for libel.
