A generous Winnipegger has donated a 35-foot Christmas tree to be placed at City Hall this season.

John Klassen of Sharron Bay was among the 54 candidates who were in the running to donate a tree, which is a Colorado Blue Spruce and measures 4.9 m (16 feet) in diameter at its base.

Klassen has lived in the home for about 43 years, and he and his wife Lydia were in attendance as the Public Works Department’s Urban Forestry Branch removed the tree this morning. “My wife and I are very excited about donating our tree to the City, for all of Winnipeg to enjoy over the holiday season,” Mr. Klassen said.

A crane will be used to position the tree in front of City Hall on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The tree will then be decorated with over 5,000 white LED lights during the coming days.
