Ground was officially broken Friday morning on the new retail development that will house IKEA on the corner of Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway. Premier Greg Selinger, Mayor Sam Katz and the president of Fairweather Properties, Michael Nozick, were on hand for the ceremony.

“Seasons of Tuxedo,” as it’s known, will be home to dozens of stores, restaurants and a movie theatre.
Construction on the retail development is slated to begin in time for some stores to be open by the summer of 2011. IKEA is expected to open its doors by 2013.
The sod-turning comes just one day after another open house was held to gauge public input on the future of Kenaston Boulevard. The city wishes to widen Route 90 to relieve the traffic congestion that Winnipeggers deal with on a daily basis between Taylor Avenue and Academy Road. Along with the widening of Kenaston, road upgrades will also take place around the Seasons of Tuxedo development before it’s fully operational.
