A 47-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted by her husband on January 20 has since died.
RCMP say the woman was taken to Portage la Prairie hospital in critical condition last Wednesday morning, but passed away Saturday night in hospital.
The charges against the woman’s husband, 54-year-old Kenneth Edward McDougall, have been upgraded from attempted murder to first degree murder.
An autopsy on the woman is scheduled for later today at the Health Sciences Centre.
McDougall will make his first court appearance in Winnipeg today.
UPDATE: January 27 — The victim has been identified as Justina McDougall of Portage la Prairie. The cause of death has been attributed to asphyxiation.
