City Mulling Over Multi-Year Contract Recycling Pickup Proposal

The Public Service is recommending to the City of Winnipeg that National Waste Services Inc. be awarded a multi-year contract for weekly residential automated recycling collection.

The recommendation is part of a report going to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works on Tuesday, February 9.

The cost of the 7.5 year contract is $35,056,800 and would begin on September 16, 2010 to March 2, 2018.

Part of the report asks for authority to issue a bid opportunity for the lease or purchase of 185,000 carts for the proposed September 2010 start date. As for the cost of the 240-litre carts, the city says it has been factored into the operating budget.

The Public Service also recommended carts be placed on both sides of back lanes to better serve residents.
