The Manitoba Bison men’s swim team finished their CIS Championship weekend in Toronto with rookie Riley Pickerl finishing fifth in the 1500-metre freestyle.

Pickerl has been an all-star this season and proved to be worthy of the title again by posting a new Bison record of 15:39.89 in the 1500-metre race and broke his own record by almost eight seconds.

The 20-year-old Winnipeg native also set new Bison records in the 200-metre freestyle event and 400-metre freestyle. Pickerl comes from a swimming background, and explained recently how he got his start in the pool. Watch an interview shot back in December 2009.

The Bison men’s team finished 14th overall with 26 points, which is an improvement from 15th place last year at the CIS Nationals.

The Bisons had two male and one female swimmer in the Nationals competition and had one swimmer make it to the top five.
