It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving athlete under the circumstances, but Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette won bronze in ladies’ free skating program Thursday night.
The 24-year-old unfortunately lost her mother just days ago. Therese Rochette had come to Vancouver on the weekend to see her daughter compete, but suffered a heart attack. It was unclear whether Joannie would go on to compete, but earlier this week she pulled off a stunning performance in the short program.
Rochette earned a total score of 202.64, sitting behind Mao Asada of Japan, and Yu-Na Kim of Korea, who won gold.
