A 17-year-old girl from the Long Plain First Nation is dead after being hit by a truck on Tuesday while riding her bicycle along a roadway.
Portage la Prairie RCMP responded at about 9 p.m., where they found the injured girl, but were unsuccessful in saving her.
A 33-year-old man from the Long Plain First Nation was arrested at the scene and charges are pending. Police say he was operating a 1998 GMC pickup truck at the time.
The investigation continues, as police believe alcohol to be a factor in the collision.
UPDATE: March 25 — Derrick Lee Myran has been charged with a number of offenses and appeared in Portage la Prairie court today. Police confirm alcohol was a factor in the collision.
