A Manitoba film is the recipient of an award given out at the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto over the weekend.

“Black Field” won for best Canadian feature, and is the debut film by Danishka Esterhazy — a Winnipeg filmmaker.

The film is a romantic historical drama set in 19th century rural Manitoba. Variety describes the film as “a Brontë-esque tale of two sisters and the mysterious male who romances them both. Writer-director Danishka Esterhazy gets the feel of rugged prairie life just right.”

“Black Field” will be released in theatres across Canada in June.
