Downtown Bike Patrol on the Road Today

April 29, 2010 10:25 AM | News

If you notice men and women in uniforms (besides police officers) riding bicycles in the downtown area today, that’s the Downtown BIZ Watch.

The 10 members of the Downtown Watch Bike Patrol will be zooming around all areas of the the city’s core, including inside downtown parkades.

Earlier this week, patrol members finished up their extensive training, which included balance and agility drills. “The bike patrol can move faster thus making them even more efficient,” said Stefano Grande, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ executive director. “Patrols on bikes are also more quiet, so they have the added benefit of stealth. It’s just another tool in keeping our downtown as safe as possible for everyone.”

The patrols will operate from 8 a.m to midnight until the end of May, and from 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. until August 31.

Mountain Equipment Co-op is supporting the initiative by providing brand new bikes for the patrol crew.
