63 Communities Celebrating World’s Largest Social Saturday Night

May 14, 2010 7:21 AM | News

There’s one day and counting until the World’s Largest Social gets underway in 63 communities around Manitoba. The gang at Manitoba Homecoming 2010 have been feverishly working for months to pull off the province-wide party on Saturday — which you know will include cubed cheese, KUB bread and Old Dutch chips.

“We’re amazed by the overwhelming response to the World’s Largest Social,” said Kevin Walters, Manitoba Homecoming 2010 Executive Director. “We anticipate over 30,000 people will be dancing and celebrating at the same time all across the province. Each community that is hosting a Homecoming social will keep the funds generated from their own event that will in turn be used for such initiatives as new baseball diamonds, arena expansions and even an MRI machine at a local hospital. In total, they may raise a quarter of a million dollars in support of local projects.”

Local celebrations will happen at the Winnipeg Convention Centre starting at 8 p.m. Entertainment for the evening includes Fabulous George, That 70’s Band and Rocky Roletti and the Retro Rhythm Review. Homegrown Olympic speed skater Cindy Klassen will be at the social from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on behalf of her sponsor, MTS Allstream.

Randy Bachman is playing in Brandon, The Foster Martin Band will be in Vita, Hawg Wyld in Portage la Prairie, Sierra Noble and classic rockers Streetheart in Neepawa and the Dust Rhinos in Dauphin, just to name just a few.

On Wednesday, Neepawa began hosting a four-day celebration to honour Manitoba’s 140th birthday.

Tickets to all 63 socials are available at Ticketmaster. For more information, visit ManitobaHomecoming2010.com.
