Starting blocks

A week of preliminary events have led up to the Winnipeg’s School Division’s 100th anniversary Track and Field Meet.

Students from a number of schools will compete on Friday at the U of M’s University Stadium.

Past coaches and alumni athletes will also be there, including Sisler High School track coach John Iwanski, who also happens to hold one of the meet’s longest standing individual records at a 49.6 second finish in the senior 400-metres in 1972. The record was later tied by Grant Park High School’s Byron Goodwin in 1990.

The Meet wasn’t always held at University Stadium. In years past, Osborne Stadium played host, but in 2008, the event merged with the Winnipeg West Athletic Conference and moved to a larger venue.

The action begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 800-metre final.
