Global Medical Minds Congregate at U of M

The top medical research minds in the world will gather in Winnipeg today and tomorrow as the University of Manitoba hosts the East-West Alliance.

The university will be the first Canadian partner to host the conference, as it welcomes the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shantou University, St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, Stanford University, University of California – Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Hong Kong and Institut Pasteur.

The first round of sessions will focus on challenges in global health, research response to pandemic threats, the impact of H1N1 on global health, and coordinating medical research and education in times of crisis.

Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer, Dr. Joel Kettner, and Dr. Frank Plummer, scientific director general of the National Microbiology Laboratory and chief science advisor of the Public Health Agency of Canada, will be among the speakers.

The East-West Alliance Conference begins at 9 a.m. on both days in the Frederic Gaspard Theatre (formerly Theatre A), 2nd floor, Basic Medical Sciences Building, Bannatyne Campus at 727 McDermot Ave.
