The second annual Springfield Chicken Daze got underway Friday night at the Oak Bank Arena. It was a bit of a slow start due to the rain that moved in, but the fun didn’t slow down the headlining chicken races. “It’s all about bringing back the fun to the rapidly growing community,” said chair Lenay Gutoski.
Many locals in the area remember the chicken derby days in the 70s and 80s, which would draw a crowd from as far away as Minneapolis.
Naturally, chickens are lousy racers and need a bit of a push. They usually circle around each other and then sit down. You can’t win a race that way, but eventually there has to be a winner. A young lady poses with Springfield’s “fastest” chicken after the races were over for the day (left).
The three-day Springfield Chicken Daze wraps up later today.
