Woman Killed in Highway Accident Near Portage la Prairie

June 8, 2010 10:26 AM | News

A two-vehicle collision near Portage la Prairie has claimed the life of a 41-year-old woman.

RCMP say at about 9 p.m. on Monday, a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta was travelling northbound through the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 16 when it was struck on the driver’s side by a 2009 Buick Allure travelling eastbound on Highway 1.

Although the intersection is controlled with traffic signals, RCMP say witness reports indicate the Jetta failed to stop at a red light and was struck by the Buick, which had the green light.

The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta, a woman from Portage la Prairie, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her 48-year-old male passenger, also from Portage, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Buick Allure, a 60-year-old woman from the R.M. of Shellmouth Boulton, was transported to hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol is considered to be a factor in the collision.

The deceased woman’s name has not been released.
