A new lion exhibit at the Assiniboine Park Zoo will definitely please visitors as the busy summer months approach.
The zoo unveiled the exhibit on Tuesday, which will house a 4-year-old female named Kaya and a 3-year-old male named Xerxes — both of whom came from Ontario, but are originally a species of Africa.
Watch:
The Zoological Society of Manitoba kicked in $350,000 to help upgrade the $1.3 million facility, which hadn’t kept lions on a permanent basis since 1981. In 2005, a group of lions returned to the zoo after many public inquiries, but were only there for a short period of time. The building previously housed the Giant Panda exhibit.
The zoo hopes to acquire rare Asian lions in a couple years, but for now, visitors will be treated to the African pair.
